Spanish PM Blames Russia, Israel For Ceuta Migration Disinformation
(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez points to Russia and Israel as possible sources associated with disinformation that circulated during the migration crisis in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.
Sanchez says misleading claims spread widely across social media during the episode, linking the activity to what he describes as networks associated with Russia and Israel, as well as an international far-right movement that frequently uses migration-related issues to criticize Spain and the wider European Union.
"The reality we are facing does not necessarily mean that it has to come from a state actor," he noted.
The Spanish government continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Ceuta crisis, while Sanchez highlights the role played by false information in fueling confusion and encouraging irregular migration.
He says a Supreme Court ruling was distorted online and circulated through social media, with criminal groups involved in human trafficking also allegedly helping spread the misleading claims.
One false claim suggested that migrants who reached Ceuta by swimming could not subsequently be deported.
“which is untrue, but this misinformation was used and disseminated on social media.”
The episode highlights concerns over the use of fabricated or misleading information to influence migration movements and intensify political tensions in Spain and across Europe.
According to official Spanish government estimates, around 72,000 people entered Ceuta irregularly from Morocco between July 30 and 31.
