Yemen Forces Intercept Houthi Boats Near Red Sea Islands
(MENAFN) Yemen’s government-backed National Resistance Forces say they prevent Houthi “suicide boats” from reaching Yemeni islands in the Red Sea during attempted movements toward areas near key international shipping routes.
According to reports, the government-aligned forces detect several boats approaching islands under their control and move to stop what they describe as an attempted infiltration.
The forces say the boats are trying to “infiltrate and approach liberated islands that control the arteries of international shipping.”
They add that their units “confronted these boats,” but do not disclose how many vessels were involved or what happened to them afterward.
The statement says Houthi forces were seen carrying out “Intense movements of suicide boats” at different times on Sunday and Monday. The Houthis have not immediately issued a response to the claims.
The incident comes amid renewed tensions in Yemen following years of conflict between government forces, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-backed Houthis, who captured Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014.
Although fighting had eased considerably since April 2022, tensions have intensified since late 2023 as the Houthis became increasingly involved in regional hostilities following the outbreak of the Gaza war.
The group has carried out attacks targeting Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, while renewed clashes have increased concerns that Yemen could once again slide into a broader conflict.
