Germany Calls for More Attractive EU After Iceland Rejects Accession Talks
(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expresses disappointment over Icelanders’ decision to reject the reopening of negotiations on joining the European Union, saying the bloc should assess ways to become more appealing to countries considering membership.
"That would have been a great opportunity to grow stronger together. For the European Union, this means we must consider how we can become more attractive," Wadephul said before departing for Tunisia.
He stresses that EU membership cannot be taken for granted and argues that the bloc should identify areas where it can improve, particularly by strengthening the economic opportunities it offers to potential members.
"It's not automatically the case that everyone aspires to join the European Union. And I think that gives us a reason to look at where we can improve, where we can work on making ourselves more attractive. Of course, this applies in particular to the economic prospects we offer," he said.
Iceland first submits its application for EU membership in 2009, following the collapse of its banking sector during the global financial crisis.
Formal accession negotiations begin in 2010 but are suspended three years later after a euroskeptic government comes to power. The process remains stalled, although Iceland does not officially withdraw its membership application.
