Kremlin Says Putin-Trump-Zelenskyy Summit Requires Ukraine Deal
(MENAFN) The Kremlin says a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should take place only after substantial progress is made toward resolving the Ukraine conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says the idea of a three-way presidential summit has been discussed for some time, while rejecting the notion that the leaders should meet simply to work through the details of a possible settlement.
"Agreements are not a primitive deal. It is a complex settlement process consisting of a huge number of details," he said.
Peskov argues that the main purpose of such a summit should be to complete and formally approve agreements that have already been developed through negotiations.
He describes a meeting focused solely on discussing the finer points of a potential settlement as "absolutely useless," saying the three leaders should instead gather with the objective of "finalizing the agreements."
The Kremlin official also accuses Ukraine of showing little willingness to participate in what he calls "real settlement" efforts.
Reports of a possible trilateral meeting emerge after CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly discusses the idea during a recent visit to Moscow.
The Kremlin has previously indicated that a Putin-Trump-Zelenskyy meeting would require extensive preparation and should come only after meaningful progress is achieved through negotiations.
