Unification Church Chief Faces Two Years Prison Sentence for Corruption
(MENAFN) The head of South Korea’s Unification Church receives a two-year prison sentence on Monday after being found guilty in a corruption case involving former first lady Kim Keon-hee.
Han Hak-ja, 83, the widow of church founder Sun Myung Moon, faces allegations that she arranged for luxury gifts, including a necklace and a Chanel bag, to be delivered to Kim through an intermediary in July 2022 in an effort to obtain political favors for the religious organization.
Han, who was detained last year, is prosecuted on several charges in a case that includes allegations of improper links between religious groups and political figures.
The court finds Han and other defendants guilty of providing gifts to Kim as part of an alleged effort to secure favorable treatment for matters involving the Unification Church, according to reports.
Kim is also serving a prison sentence in connection with the case. She initially receives a 20-month sentence in January after being convicted of accepting expensive gifts from the church in return for political assistance. An appeals court later raises her sentence to four years after finding her guilty of additional offenses, including receiving another Chanel bag and manipulating stock prices.
Kim is the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon is removed from office by the Constitutional Court in April 2025 after lawmakers impeach him over his brief declaration of martial law in December 2024.
