Russia Opens Early Voting in Remote Regions for Duma Vote
(MENAFN) Russia's Central Election Commission (CEC) announced Sunday that early voting has begun in hard-to-reach and remote areas across several regions, ahead of September's State Duma elections.
According to a CEC statement, the early voting window was opened to accommodate small pockets of voters — including certain military personnel, residents of northern settlements, reindeer herders, workers stationed at remote industrial sites, staff at polar and weather stations, and crews aboard vessels that will be at sea during the main election period.
Local election officials in each region hold the authority to decide whether to offer early voting, which can be scheduled anytime between Aug. 30 and Sept. 17. The option is available either for all voters assigned to polling stations in isolated areas, or for specific groups situated too far from polling places to be reached through conventional transportation.
Officials expect the number of early voters to remain small relative to Russia's overall electorate. During the 2021 State Duma elections, just 192,928 voters cast early ballots in hard-to-reach areas and aboard vessels at sea — roughly 0.17% of the total electorate, the CEC reported.
The main phase of voting for Russia's State Duma elections is set to run from Sept. 18-20.
