Xi Jinping Lands in Bishkek Ahead of Landmark SCO Summit
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, on Sunday, kicking off a multi-nation tour that includes the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit as well as state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt, state media reported.
Beijing-based Xinhua News reported: "Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Bishkek on Sunday for the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan."
According to the outlet, Xi's visits to both nations come at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Traveling with Xi are his wife, Peng Liyuan; Foreign Minister Wang Yi; and Cai Qi, one of China's most senior officials and director of the Communist Party of China General Office.
Xi won't be the only major leader in Bishkek this week. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Premier Shehbaz Sharif, and other heads of state from member nations are expected to converge on the Kyrgyz capital Monday for the two-day summit.
This year's gathering marks a milestone: 25 years since the regional bloc was formed to counterbalance Western global influence. The SCO unites Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus.
On the sidelines, Putin is also slated to hold separate bilateral meetings with Pezeshkian, Xi and other leaders, according to Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov.
