Lee Jae Myung Overhauls Cabinet, Taps 6 New Ministers
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung unveiled a sweeping Cabinet shake-up on Sunday, naming six new ministers including his picks to lead the finance and defense ministries, according to local media reports.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik revealed the nominations at a news conference, with a Seoul-based news agency reporting that Vice Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il has been tapped to head the finance ministry.
For defense minister, Lee selected Kang Shin-chul, formerly the deputy commander of the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command.
Rounding out the nominations: Vice Land Minister Hong Jee-sun for land minister, and Kim Seung-won of the ruling Democratic Party for justice minister. Rep. Yong Hye-in, floor leader of the minor Basic Income Party, was picked to lead the gender equality ministry, while Lee So-young was named to oversee small and medium-sized enterprises.
In a newly created role, Lee Won-ju, a senior Environment Ministry official, was nominated as presidential aide for the administration's "megaproject" initiative.
Sunday's announcement represents the first major Cabinet overhaul since Lee assumed the presidency in June last year. The reshuffle lands at a politically sensitive moment, as his approval rating has slid to its lowest point yet, driven by mounting public frustration over soaring housing costs and volatile stock markets.
The nominees now face confirmation hearings before the National Assembly.
