Pezeshkian: Iran Will Not "Sit Still" After US Strike on Larak
(MENAFN) Iran will not "sit still in the face of any aggression," President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday, even as he insisted Tehran "is not looking for war" — his first public remarks since the weekend's US attack on Iran's Larak Island.
Speaking ahead of his departure for an international summit in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian said Iran would meet any further attacks with a firm response, according to a news agency.
"Will give a decisive response to the aggressors," he said, referring to how Iran would react if struck again.
"Instability and unrest in the region are not in the interest of any country and will challenge everyone," he added.
Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, for a summit of heads of state from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member nations.
The remarks come after US forces struck two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island Sunday — the first American strikes on Iranian territory since late July, a US official told an American news outlet.
The operation reportedly targeted systems allegedly being readied to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the strike killed or wounded several fighters and civilians and vowed retaliation, while an Iranian news agency reported that initial information pointed to drones as the means of attack.
