IRGC Claims Downing of US Drone Over Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Monday that it had shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz, sending it crashing into Gulf waters.
According to an Iranian news agency, the IRGC public relations office stated that the "ever-watchful fighters of the IRGC's modern air defense" struck the long-range US MQ-9 Reaper drone with missile fire early Monday, bringing it down into the Gulf.
The statement further credited the ongoing presence of the Iranian public in the field as the greatest source of backing for the country's forces.
The claim follows a US strike Sunday on two Iranian launchers located on Larak Island — the first American assault on Iranian soil since late July, a US official told an American news outlet.
Iranian media reported that early assessments pointed to drones as the method used in the attack.
Washington's operation reportedly targeted equipment believed to be in preparation for launching rockets loaded with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC said the strike left several fighters and civilians dead or wounded, and pledged retaliation.
