Trump Posts AI Video of Kharg Island "Blown to Smithereens"

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump late Sunday posted an AI-generated video depicting the imagined destruction of Iran's Kharg Island, declaring the strategic oil hub was being reduced to rubble.

"Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!! President DJT," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The post came hours after US forces struck two Iranian launchers on a separate island, Larak Island, earlier Sunday — the first American strikes on Iranian territory since late July, a US official told an American news outlet.

That operation reportedly targeted systems allegedly being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the strike killed or wounded several fighters and civilians and vowed to retaliate, while an Iranian news agency said preliminary findings pointed to drones as the method of attack.

Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran's oil industry and exports, has sat inactive since July 31, according to ship-tracking firm Kpler and consultancy Energy Aspects. Maritime intelligence company Windward reported that satellite imagery showed all three loading berths at Kharg had remained empty for a prolonged stretch.

The island typically handles nearly 90% of Iran's crude exports, owing to its deep-water access capable of accommodating large oil tankers.

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have stayed elevated since the war erupted with strikes on Iran in late February. While a framework agreement emerged in June through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, the US reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ports in mid-July after a Pakistani-brokered interim deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz fell apart.
