Nepal-China Flood Death Toll Hits 919, Nearly 4,800 Missing

(MENAFN) The death toll from catastrophic flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to at least 919, with almost 4,800 people still unaccounted for—including 853 foreign nationals—authorities confirmed Monday, six days after the disaster struck.

According to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 903 deaths have been verified within the country, while 4,247 people remain missing, among them 592 foreign nationals.

Rescue crews are continuing to comb affected regions, working simultaneously to reach workers trapped at multiple hydropower project sites.

Nepal's missing include personnel from across its security and civil services: 25 from the Nepal Police, 45 from the Nepalese Army, 13 from the Nepal Armed Police Force, 14 from the Customs Office, and three from the Immigration Office. An additional 933 hydropower station personnel are also unaccounted for, alongside 127 Nepalese travelers.

On the Chinese side of the border, a state media outlet reported 16 confirmed deaths and 546 people still missing in Gyirong County, located in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region—also known as Tibet. Of those missing there, 261 are foreign nationals.

Combined, the disaster has claimed 919 lives and left 4,793 people missing, including 853 foreigners.

China has mobilized more than 2,100 rescue personnel, backed by hundreds of vehicles and thousands of pieces of specialized equipment, to support ongoing search efforts.

The catastrophe began Aug. 26, when a glacier fracture on Nepal's Mount Langtang Lirung—at an altitude of roughly 5,200 meters—triggered an ice-rock avalanche. That avalanche escalated into a massive debris flow that tore through border valleys, unleashing floodwaters and mudslides that devastated Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavre districts and the Kathmandu Valley, while also burying the Gyirong border area on the Chinese side.
