Oil Tanker Ablaze After Hitting Mines in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) An oil tanker erupted in flames Monday after striking two sea mines while attempting to navigate an "illegal" route through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced.
The vessel was "completely stopped after being hit by two sea mines," the IRGC said in a statement carried by a state broadcaster.
The IRGC did not disclose whether there were casualties or specify the scale of damage to the tanker.
The military force urged all ships transiting the strategically vital waterway to adhere to passage procedures set by Tehran.
The announcement followed an earlier IRGC claim that it had downed a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz, sending it crashing into Gulf waters.
The incident comes a day after US forces struck two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island Sunday—the first American strikes on Iranian territory since late July, a US official told an American news outlet.
