Nepal-China Border Floods Leave Hundreds Dead, Thousands Missing
(MENAFN) The death toll from severe flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border rises to at least 919, while nearly 4,800 people remain unaccounted for six days after the disaster, according to authorities.
Nepal reports 903 confirmed deaths, with 4,247 people still missing. Among those unaccounted for are 592 foreign nationals.
Search and rescue teams continue working across the hardest-hit areas as authorities attempt to locate missing people and reach workers stranded at several hydropower facilities.
Those missing in Nepal include 25 police officers, 45 members of the army, 13 personnel from the Armed Police Force, 14 customs officials and three immigration officers. In addition, 933 workers at various hydropower projects remain unaccounted for.
Authorities also report that 127 Nepalese travelers are among those still missing.
Across the border in China, 16 deaths have been confirmed in Gyirong County in the southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, while another 546 people remain missing. Of those, 261 are foreign nationals.
When the figures from both countries are combined, the disaster has claimed at least 919 lives and left 4,793 people missing, including 853 foreigners.
