Tanker Catches Fire After Hitting Sea Mines in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) An oil tanker catches fire after striking two sea mines while attempting to travel through what Iran describes as an “illegal” route in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The vessel comes to a complete stop after hitting the two mines, the IRGC says in a statement.
Iranian authorities do not immediately provide information about possible casualties or the scale of damage caused to the tanker.
The IRGC urges ships operating in the strategically important waterway to follow the navigation procedures announced by Tehran for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident follows an earlier announcement by the IRGC that Iranian forces had shot down a US drone over the Strait, causing it to crash into Gulf waters.
Meanwhile, US forces reportedly strike two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, in what is described as the first US attacks on Iranian territory since late July.
According to reports, the launch systems were allegedly being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
