Cruz Urges Trump to Arm Iranian Protesters for Regime Change

(MENAFN) US Sen. Ted Cruz called on the Trump administration Sunday to directly supply weapons to Iranian protesters and Kurdish groups as a means of driving regime change in Iran.

"What I've been urging is for President (Donald) Trump ... to arm the protesters, the people of Iran," Cruz told media.

He argued it is "not fair" to expect civilians to confront armed soldiers with nothing but rocks, insisting that the Iranian people — not "American boots on the ground" — should be the ones to oust the current government.

Cruz's appeal comes after Trump claimed previous covert efforts to arm demonstrators had failed. Trump previously said Washington funneled "a lot" of firearms through Kurdish intermediaries, but suggested those groups "kept them" for their own use rather than passing them along. He voiced deep disappointment in the groups involved, saying the supplies never reached their intended recipients.

The decision to strike Iran alongside Israel is said to have been partly driven by a desire to topple the current leadership of the Islamic Republic. In a video address announcing the attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, Trump told Iranians that "the hour of your freedom is at hand … when we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed that sentiment, saying "our joint operation will create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their fate into their own hands."
