Iran Claims Downing US Drone Over Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says its air defenses shoot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz early Monday, causing the aircraft to crash into Gulf waters.
According to reports, the IRGC’s public relations office says Iranian air defense units use missiles to target a US MQ-9 Reaper long-range drone, bringing it down over the strategic waterway.
The Iranian force also praises what it describes as continued public support for the country’s military forces during the ongoing tensions.
The reported incident follows a US operation on Sunday in which two Iranian launchers on Larak Island were targeted. The strikes reportedly mark the first US attacks on Iranian territory since late July.
Iranian reports say preliminary information suggests that drones were used in the US operation.
The United States reportedly targeted the launch systems because they were allegedly being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC says several Iranian military personnel and civilians were killed or injured in the attack and warns that Tehran will respond.
