Jordan Downs 8 Missiles as Iran Claims Strikes on US Bases
(MENAFN) Jordan's military said early Monday it had shot down eight missiles that entered the country's airspace, neutralizing them before they could endanger residents or infrastructure.
In a statement, the army confirmed all projectiles were destroyed in flight, with no reported casualties or damage on the ground.
The interception came shortly after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched ballistic missiles at the King Hussein and Azraq airbases in Jordan, both used by US forces. Tehran framed the assault as retaliation for a US strike on Iran's Larak Island.
According to the IRGC, the operation combined missiles and drones aimed at military infrastructure and zones housing fighter jets, with the group claiming the strikes inflicted "heavy damage."
The exchange traces back to Sunday, when US forces hit two Iranian missile launchers stationed on Larak Island — the first American strikes on Iranian soil since late July, a US official told an American news agency. Washington alleged the launchers were being readied to fire rockets loaded with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC reported that the US strike killed and wounded multiple fighters and civilians, and pledged further retaliation.
The confrontation is the latest flashpoint in a conflict between Tehran and Washington that has simmered since fighting first erupted with strikes on Iran in late February.
