Gaza Families Seek Answers Over Missing Palestinians
(MENAFN) Palestinian families gather outside the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Gaza City on Sunday, calling for information about thousands of people whose whereabouts remain unknown since Israel began its war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
The gathering takes place on the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed each year on Aug. 30.
Palestinian authorities estimate that more than 11,200 people remain missing or unaccounted for. The figure includes people believed to be trapped beneath destroyed buildings, individuals who disappeared during Israeli military operations or forced displacement, and an unknown number who are believed to be held in Israeli detention.
Families attending the demonstration describe the uncertainty surrounding their relatives as deeply distressing, with many continuing to seek information about their loved ones months or years after they disappeared.
Among the protesters is the mother of 25-year-old Mahmoud Bassem Matar, who has been missing since March 12 after leaving his home during Ramadan.
Now living in displacement at the Nuseirat refugee camp, she says her son suffers from psychological disorders and requires particular care.
She explains that members of the family searched extensively for him and contacted hospitals, organizations dealing with missing people and the Red Cross, but their efforts have so far failed to establish his whereabouts.
