Israeli Commander Shows No Regret Over Deadly Gaza Aid Strike
(MENAFN) An Israeli military commander who authorized the 2024 drone strikes that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers in Gaza says he stands by his decision and expresses no regret over ordering the attack.
“I’m not sorry for what I did,” Col. Nochi Mendel said.
Mendel, who was removed from his position as chief of staff of the Israeli army’s Nahal Brigade following the incident, made the comments in an interview conducted in October 2025.
The interview was released Thursday after the Israeli military decided against opening a criminal investigation or pursuing additional measures against those involved in the strikes.
Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, 43, and six other WCK employees were killed on April 1, 2024, when Israeli drones targeted three clearly marked vehicles traveling together as part of a humanitarian convoy in central Gaza.
The three vehicles were struck individually over a period of about four minutes as survivors attempted to transfer between the damaged cars.
Mendel says drone footage indicated that armed Palestinians were present alongside WCK personnel near a warehouse in central Gaza. He further claims that an armed individual later entered one of the aid vehicles.
According to Mendel, the drone operators stationed at Palmachim air base confirmed the alleged presence of an armed person before he gave authorization for the strike.
