Israel Deports British Activist After He Is Seized in West Bank
(MENAFN) Israel orders the deportation of British activist Finn Joughin after he is detained in the southern occupied West Bank following an encounter with armed Israeli occupiers, according to reports.
Joughin is reportedly taken on Saturday from the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair in Masafer Yatta. His lawyer, Inbar Shaked Vardi, says he is held against his will inside a shed for approximately 30 minutes before being transferred to police custody.
Israeli police initially seek to keep Joughin in detention but later withdraw the request and instead order his immediate deportation.
Vardi says Joughin had been participating in an initiative that provides a protective presence for Palestinian communities and was attempting to safeguard Palestinian property when armed occupiers allegedly attacked and detained him.
“Despite clear documentation of the assault, Israel police chose to arrest the activist,” she said, adding that she was not aware of the alleged attackers being questioned by police.
Police reportedly investigate Joughin after an Israeli occupier files a complaint alleging that the activist committed an indecent act against a minor.
Vardi firmly rejects the accusation, arguing that video footage circulating online shows Joughin attempting to protect residents and their property during the confrontation.
A solidarity organization active in the South Hebron Hills says Israeli occupiers have repeatedly harassed Palestinians in the area and attempted to take cameras and mobile phones from individuals recording the incident.
