Jordan Intercepts Eight Missiles After Airspace Breach
(MENAFN) Jordan’s armed forces say they intercept eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace early Monday, destroying them before they could threaten civilians or cause damage to property.
The military says the missiles are neutralized before reaching areas that could put people or infrastructure at risk.
The interceptions come after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have launched ballistic missile attacks against the King Hussein and Azraq US airbases in Jordan. The Iranian force says the operation, which also involves drones, targets military infrastructure and locations where fighter aircraft are deployed, resulting in what it describes as “heavy damage.”
The reported Iranian attack follows a US operation on Sunday targeting two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. According to reports, the strikes mark the first US attacks on Iranian territory since late July.
The launchers are reportedly targeted because they were allegedly being prepared to launch rockets equipped with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC says the US strikes leave several military personnel and civilians dead or injured and vows to retaliate.
Relations between Iran and the United States remain highly strained following the outbreak of hostilities in late February. A framework agreement was reached in June through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, but tensions escalated again in July when the US launched a two-week bombing campaign and reinstated a naval blockade following disputes over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
