Palestinian Groups Accuse Israel of Concealing Gaza Detainees’ Fate
(MENAFN) Palestinian prisoners’ rights organizations say Israel continues to withhold information about thousands of Palestinians detained from the Gaza Strip, with their whereabouts and conditions remaining unknown for a third consecutive year.
The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, the Palestinian Prisoner Society and Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association issue the accusations in a joint statement released on Sunday to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on Aug. 30.
The organizations say Israeli authorities have failed to disclose detainees’ identities, locations and medical conditions while also restricting communication between prisoners and their families, lawyers and human rights organizations.
They characterize the practice as systematic enforced disappearance and warn that the lack of information and oversight can create an environment in which torture, ill-treatment and medical neglect can occur.
The groups also criticize restrictions preventing lawyers, the International Committee of the Red Cross and human rights organizations from gaining adequate access to Palestinian detainees.
They say it remains impossible to establish an exact number of Palestinians from Gaza who have been detained because documenting individual cases and determining the fate of missing people has been extremely difficult.
According to the organizations, they have documented cases involving thousands of detainees from Gaza during the past three years. They add that Israeli authorities have frequently responded to requests for information by saying that the relevant details are not available.
