Hayward Gallery Publisher Recommends Anish Kapoor Books

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The Hayward Gallery's publisher, Mary Richards, has recommended five essential books to offer deeper insight into the five-decade career of British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor. These selections accompany a new exhibition of Kapoor's work at the London venue, which is on view until October 18.

This marks the second time the Hayward Gallery has dedicated its space to Kapoor's art, nearly three decades after his first institutional show there. The current exhibition features a range of new pieces, alongside works reminiscent of his signature styles, including highly reflective mirror sculptures, deep black voids, and expansive red inflatable installations.

Two new publications accompany the show, a catalogue for the exhibition and the first book focused solely on Kapoor's photography. Richards's selections include:

Anish Kapoor ( 1998 ) a catalogue with essays by Homi K. Bhabha and Pier Luigi Tazzi. Richards describes it as the catalogue for Kapoor's first major UK exhibition and notes that Bhabha's essay,“Anish Kapoor: Making Emptiness,” is“as insightful and philosophical as Kapoor's drive to make sculpture.” Anish Kapoor ( 2009 ) another catalogue, featuring contributions from Norman Rosenthal, Homi K. Bhabha, and Jean de Loisy. This book followed Kapoor's survey at the Royal Academy, which included the work Shooting into the Corner ( 2008-09 ). Richards calls it an“excellent place to begin” for its new texts and anthology of older essays. Anish Kapoor: Versailles ( 2015 ) a catalogue created for Kapoor's commission at the Palace of Versailles, with texts by Alfred Paquement, Julia Kristeva, Richard Leydier, and Jean de Loisy. Uniquely, its pages arrived sealed and required cutting to be read. This was also the first publication to feature Kapoor's photographs and an interview with the artist by Kristeva. Anish Kapoor: Works, Thoughts, Experiments ( 2018 ) a catalogue for an exhibition at Serralves, Porto, with contributions from Suzanne Cotter and Christopher Bollas. This book traces Kapoor's studio practice backward, starting with large-scale contemporary works and concluding with intimate 1970s studio photographs. Richards finds this“visual essay of an artist's evolving studio practice is fascinating and rewards repeated looking.” Anish Kapoor: Painting ( 2022 ) which includes essays from Homi K. Bhabha, Greg Hilty, Emma Ridgway, Martin Kemp, Chris Knight, Anish Kapoor, and Julia Kristeva. Richards highlights that this is the first book to thoroughly examine Kapoor's paintings, which are less known than his sculptures. The texts explore recurring themes such as voids, wounds, viscera, and mountains, examining Kapoor's engagement with the boundaries of painting and sculpture.

The new Hayward Gallery exhibition is accompanied by two books: Anish Kapoor, published by Hayward Gallery Publishing, a 240-page hardcover priced at £45, and Way Out Way In: Photographs by Anish Kapoor, also from Hayward Gallery Publishing, a 256-page hardcover available for £25.
