Search Continues for Missing People After Grand Canyon Flood
(MENAFN) US park rangers are conducting search and rescue operations for more than 20 people who remain unaccounted for following a powerful flash flood in Arizona’s Grand Canyon on Saturday.
“The National Park Service is asking the public to provide information for more than 20 individuals who may be missing or unaccounted for,” it said on Sunday.
The sudden flooding struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas in the remote interior of the national park during the afternoon. The locations sit along the Colorado River and are popular destinations for visitors to the Grand Canyon.
Park authorities are asking the public to share any information about hikers who had campground reservations or were traveling along the Bright Angel Creek corridor on Saturday, as officials work to determine who may still be missing.
Grand Canyon National Park personnel are working alongside the Arizona Department of Public Safety to carry out evacuations and search for people who may have been affected by the flooding.
By Sunday morning, authorities had evacuated 62 people from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail. Based on the latest information available, officials reported no injuries among those evacuated.
