Vessel Capsizing Off Kyrenia Leaves Seven Dead
(MENAFN) Seven people have died and 237 others have been rescued after a vessel carrying 267 people overturned off the coast of Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Sunday.
TRNC Prime Minister Unal Ustel says authorities are closely coordinating the response through a crisis center established following the accident.
“Of the 267 people aboard the vessel, 237 have been rescued by our teams. Unfortunately, seven people have lost their lives. Search and rescue efforts are continuing uninterrupted, with all our resources mobilized, to reach the 23 people who are missing,” he said.
Ustel says finding the remaining missing passengers is the main priority, with relevant government agencies and emergency teams continuing operations at the scene.
“We are carrying out search and rescue operations with great care and closely following developments,” he said.
The prime minister extends his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes those injured a rapid recovery. He also says authorities will continue providing the public with verified updates as the rescue operation progresses.
Separately, Türkiye’s Interior Ministry says it received information that the passenger vessel FILOJET, traveling from Kyrenia Port toward Tasucu Port, began taking on water approximately four miles from Kyrenia Port and faced the risk of sinking.
