Libya’s Rival Factions Back Election Commission Reform Deal
(MENAFN) Libya’s competing political sides welcome the final agreement reached by the country’s 4+4 Small Dialogue Committee to restructure the High National Elections Commission and revise election legislation.
Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, who heads the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, describes the agreement as a significant development toward ending Libya’s prolonged transitional period and advancing the country toward elections.
“Our vision is clear: the decision should rest with the Libyan people through elections that end the state of division and give all institutions their true legitimacy,” he added.
Dbeibeh expresses hope that the agreement will help move the country toward a political process centered on elections and contribute to greater stability and development.
Khalifa Haftar, commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army in eastern Libya, also voices support for the deal, describing it as progress in resolving longstanding disputes that have delayed the electoral process.
“The signing of the agreement represents progress in addressing issues that remained unresolved for years and hindered the Libyan people’s determination to move toward holding presidential and parliamentary elections,” Haftar said in a statement.
