Kyrenia Ferry Capsizing Leaves Fatalities as Rescue Efforts Continue
(MENAFN) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Unal Ustel confirms that people have died after a ferry carrying 267 passengers and crew members overturned off the coast of Kyrenia on Sunday, as extensive rescue efforts continue.
Ustel says emergency services and members of the public immediately responded to the incident, with coast guard units, boats and medical teams mobilized to assist those affected.
"Along with the coast guard, our people rushed to the scene. Everyone with a boat went to help. Our medical teams are ready, and we have made all necessary preparations."
The prime minister says authorities are closely monitoring the situation and provides details about the circumstances that led to the accident.
"There were 259 passengers and eight crew members. The vessel was supposed to travel to Türkiye yesterday, but departed today due to weather conditions. However, it was hit by a first wave at sea, and while the captain was trying to recover, the vessel began taking on water after a second wave hit," he said.
Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz says search and rescue operations involving coast guard units from both the TRNC and Türkiye, along with other relevant agencies, are continuing around the clock.
"At this point, our primary priority is rescuing the passengers and crew. We are closely following this tragic incident and providing every kind of support to search and rescue efforts," Yilmaz said.
