Russia Warns US Treats Europe as Potential Nuclear Battlefield

(MENAFN) Russian Ambassador-at-large Andrey Belousov accuses the United States of considering Europe a possible theater for nuclear conflict, arguing that Washington’s continued push for discussions about Russia’s non-strategic nuclear weapons reflects serious concerns about potential nuclear use on the continent.

In an interview Sunday, Belousov says the US focus on Russia’s non-strategic nuclear arsenal indicates that Washington may be assessing Europe as a possible location for military operations involving nuclear weapons.

"And, essentially, they view Europe as such a potential military theater," he said.

Belousov argues that US calls for greater dialogue over Russia’s non-strategic nuclear capabilities could also shift attention away from American nuclear weapons stationed in Europe, as well as Washington’s wider missile and nuclear programs.

He further claims that efforts to increase transparency surrounding Russia’s non-strategic nuclear arsenal, or calls to reduce or eliminate those weapons, could unintentionally raise the risk of a nuclear confrontation involving the US and its European allies.

“I hope that Europe will recognize the danger of Washington’s purely operational-military approach to the territory of its allies,” he said.
