Finland’s President Says Russia Will Not Risk Attacking NATO

(MENAFN) Finnish President Alexander Stubb says he does not expect Russia to launch an attack against a NATO member, rejecting predictions that Moscow could be prepared to target alliance territory by 2029.

In an interview on Saturday, Stubb describes such projections as speculative and says he has seen no evidence to support the claim.

“If someone had such a crystal ball — wonderful. But I simply see neither evidence nor facts for that,” he said. “I do not believe that Russia would ever want to attack the most powerful military alliance in the world, NATO.”

Despite his assessment, Stubb stresses that NATO members should continue preparing for potential threats rather than become complacent.

“I’m not saying ‘relax.’ One should always prepare for the worst in order to prevent it.”

Stubb says his confidence is based on two main factors: intelligence assessments and NATO’s military deterrence capabilities.

“First, I have intelligence insights. And second, we have deterrence — and this deterrence is stronger than that of any other military power anywhere in the world.”

He says the alliance’s deterrent strength comes from a combination of conventional military forces, missiles and nuclear weapons. Stubb argues that these capabilities make it highly unlikely that any country would choose to challenge NATO’s collective resolve.

“It makes no sense for any power in the world to test the resolve of this alliance.”
