Diane Kraal's research interests include the evaluation of taxation concessions, subsidies and policy for natural resources and renewable resources.

Dr Kraal's research has been multi-disciplinary, combining the expertise of academics from engineering, law and business for research on biofuels in Australia. She has collaborated on research about tax policy for water in Australia.

Dr Kraal's taxation law expertise led to major projects on tax law changes to facilitate greater uptake of electric vehicles in business fleets; and regulation for demand management and distributed energy resources.

Her research publications on tax law have applied energy justice in comparing the taxation legislation for gas in Australia and The Netherlands; decision-making on mineral extraction industry tax incentives; and energy policy implications for the comparator countries of Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.

Dr Kraal participated in the 'Just Transition to a Low Carbon Economy' 2018 conference in Edinburgh and the West Indies in 2019. She was a member of the 2018 Monash delegation to the United Nations COP24 in Poland. In 2019 she was Co-Head of the Monash Delegation to COP25 in Madrid, Spain; and a delegation member to COP27 in Egypt in 2022. She is currently a Committee member for the Energy Justice and Social Contract project at Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour, Anglet, France
