Iran Says It Attacked US Military Bases In Jordan In Retaliation

TEHRAN, Aug 31 (dpa) -- Iran said on Monday it had attacked two US military bases in Jordan with drones and missiles in retaliation for a US strike on the Iranian island of Larak.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in a statement carried by several Iranian state news agencies overnight, said the attack was in response to the US strike on Larak. Jordan's state news agency Petra, citing the military, said Jordan had destroyed eight missiles that entered its airspace.

US forces had earlier attacked targets in Iran for the first time since the end of July. Two missile launchers on Larak island were targeted, news outlets Axios, Fox News and CBS News reported, citing a US official.

IRGC members had been seen attempting to launch missiles carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a spokesman for the US Central Command (CENTCOM) was quoted as saying. Larak lies near the waterway, control of which has been fiercely contested by Iran and the US for months.

The IRGC said several people had been killed or wounded in the US strike. According to Iran's Tasnim news agency two people were killed and two others wounded.

CENTCOM rejected the IRGC's description of the US strike as an act of aggression in a post on X.

"US forces took limited, precise action against IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz. In essence, Iran created the threat and the U.S. military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce," it said.

The IRGC also said the attack on the US bases in Jordan had destroyed technical infrastructure. Jordan, however, said its forces had intercepted the Iranian missiles before they could pose a threat to civilians or property. CNN, citing a US official, reported that no impacts had so far been reported.
