Outlaw Groups Block Syrian Students from Reaching Exams
(MENAFN) Students in Syria’s southern Suwayda province are unable to reach examination centers for a second consecutive day after roads are blocked by what authorities describe as “outlaw groups,” according to reports.
The groups reportedly establish three additional checkpoints along the Suwayda-Shahba road, restricting students from traveling to examination centers in the northern countryside of the province.
Students who attempt to avoid the checkpoints by walking around them are reportedly attacked by members of the groups.
"Civil defense and Syrian Arab Red Crescent Society teams are stationed around the centers to provide support and respond to any emergency during the exam period," reports said.
The disruption follows a decision by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Aug. 17 to provide students in Suwayda with an exceptional examination session. The measure applies to students who were unable to take or finish their exams during the regular examination period.
The decision comes after similar disruptions in which armed groups associated with Druze leader Hikmat al-Hijri reportedly prevented students from reaching exam centers.
The latest incidents are part of wider tensions in Suwayda, where armed groups have been accused of attempts to disrupt public life. The province has remained under a ceasefire arrangement since July 2025.
