Libya, Syria Move to Revive Bilateral Cooperation
(MENAFN) Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani discuss steps to strengthen relations between their countries and restore several areas of bilateral cooperation during talks in Tripoli on Sunday.
The meeting takes place after Shaibani arrives in the Libyan capital, with both sides focusing on measures to renew existing cooperation mechanisms and expand coordination across multiple sectors.
Discussions include increasing diplomatic representation between Libya and Syria, reactivating the joint higher committee and boosting economic, investment and trade ties. The two officials also address outstanding financial matters and unpaid obligations involving institutions in both countries, according to reports.
The Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee serves as a formal mechanism for bilateral coordination, bringing together officials to promote political, economic and social cooperation and oversee joint initiatives.
Security matters also feature prominently in the talks, including cooperation against terrorism. The officials discuss the situation of Libyan and Syrian communities in each country, consular affairs, and matters involving prisoners, detainees, refugees and displaced people.
The reopening of the Syrian Consulate in Benghazi, in eastern Libya, is also discussed as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic and consular relations between the two countries.
