South Korean President Names New Finance, Defense Ministers
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announces a significant Cabinet reshuffle, nominating six new ministers, including candidates to lead the finance and defense ministries, according to reports.
Lee Hyoung-il, who currently serves as vice finance minister, is selected as the next finance minister. Meanwhile, Kang Shin-chul, a former deputy commander of the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command, is nominated to head the Defense Ministry.
Other appointments include Vice Land Minister Hong Jee-sun, who is tapped to become land minister, while Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Seung-won is nominated as justice minister.
Yong Hye-in, floor leader of the minor Basic Income Party, is chosen as the nominee for gender equality minister. Lee So-young is also nominated to lead the ministry responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises.
In addition to the ministerial changes, Lee Won-ju, a senior Environment Ministry official, is nominated for a newly established presidential advisory position focused on the "megaproject" initiative.
The nominations represent Lee’s first major Cabinet reshuffle since he assumed the presidency in June last year.
The changes come as the president faces a decline in public support, with his approval rating recently reaching its lowest point amid mounting concerns about rapidly increasing housing prices and instability in the stock market.
All of the ministerial nominees are expected to appear before the National Assembly for confirmation hearings.
