Hundreds of Foreign Nationals Still Missing After Tibet Mudslide Disaster
(MENAFN) The number of people still unaccounted for following a deadly mudslide near the China-Nepal border has reached 546, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, while the death toll on the Chinese side has risen to 16.
The disaster struck Gyirong Port on Wednesday in the area China refers to as the Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet. According to reports, the latest figures were established after Chinese authorities from several departments conducted joint searches and verified information about those affected.
Among the missing foreign nationals are 104 people from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States, and 15 from Britain. Canada and Australia each have six missing nationals, while four are from South Africa. Malaysia, Germany and Russia each have three missing people.
Ireland, Estonia, France, the Netherlands and New Zealand each have two nationals reported missing. Kazakhstan, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain and Hungary each have one person unaccounted for.
Chinese authorities have informed the respective embassies and consulates about the missing nationals as search and identification efforts continue.
Across the border in Nepal, the humanitarian situation has also worsened following severe flooding. Official figures and local reports indicate that the death toll has climbed to 734, while nearly 2,500 people remain missing.
