Nepal, Tibet Face Rising Death Toll as Thousands Remain Missing
(MENAFN) The death toll from severe flash floods and landslides across Nepal and China's Tibet region rises to 750, while more than 3,000 people remain unaccounted for, according to authorities and reports Sunday.
In Nepal, 2,498 people are still missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals. Chinese authorities report 16 deaths in Tibet, along with 546 people who remain missing.
Rescue teams continue searching for those unaccounted for in Nepal, including 933 employees working at hydropower facilities, 589 foreign nationals, 127 Nepalis traveling alongside foreign tourists, and residents from several disaster-hit districts.
Nearly 20,000 security personnel take part in emergency operations and rescue 8,186 people. Helicopters also transport 279 hydropower workers and 227 foreign nationals to safer locations.
Authorities continue expanding relief efforts by delivering food and other essential supplies, sending medical teams to affected areas and providing financial assistance to residents impacted by the disaster, according to reports.
The catastrophe hits the China-Nepal border region Wednesday after a sudden glacial collapse releases a massive flow of water and debris through Himalayan valleys. Villages are destroyed and critical infrastructure suffers extensive damage, while thousands of families continue searching for relatives who remain missing.
