CIA Director Calls for Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy Summit
(MENAFN) CIA Director John Ratcliffe proposes a potential meeting involving US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a secret trip to Moscow earlier this week, according to reports.
The visit also focuses on determining whether senior Russian intelligence officials could influence Putin to support efforts to restart US-brokered negotiations with Ukraine, according to people familiar with the discussions.
US officials brief Zelenskyy on Friday about Ratcliffe's meetings in Moscow, including the proposal for a three-way summit.
The Trump administration has previously floated the possibility of such a meeting. Zelenskyy has welcomed the idea, while Putin has so far opposed it.
Trump describes Ratcliffe's trip as "standard business" and says it is not intended to caution Moscow against any possible Russian attack on NATO territory.
Ratcliffe also reportedly meets with Alexander Bortnikov, chief of Russia's Federal Security Service, and delivers "a bleak assessment" of the war while encouraging Moscow to reach an agreement before its strategic position deteriorates further.
