US Provides Humanitarian Aid as Floods Devastate Nepal
(MENAFN) The United States announces more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal following severe flooding, with part of the funding allocated to emergency food supplies for as many as 10,000 affected households.
"There is no higher priority for us than the safety of American citizens. Our embassies in Nepal and China are working closely to assist Americans and support disaster relief efforts," the State Department wrote on the US social media company X.
The disaster follows the collapse of a section of a Himalayan glacier on Wednesday, which triggers widespread flooding near the Nepal-Tibet border.
The resulting floods cause extensive destruction across border communities, leaving at least 675 people dead. Rescue teams continue searching for nearly 3,000 missing people, including foreign tourists and around 100 US citizens.
Nepal's disaster management authorities report that 589 of those still missing in the country are foreign nationals. Meanwhile, 261 foreign nationals have been rescued, according to Nepalese tourism authorities.
