Gunfire at Aarau Event Kills 1, Injures 5 in Switzerland

(MENAFN) At least one person is dead and five others wounded after gunfire erupted at an event drawing roughly 3,500 attendees in the Swiss town of Aarau early Sunday, according to police.

Several of the wounded were listed in serious condition, the Aarau cantonal police said in a post on X.

A large-scale police operation is now underway as authorities hunt for the shooter or shooters responsible.

"Possible motives and the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear," police said, offering no further details on potential suspects.

Footage published by a Swiss newspaper, said to have been filmed near the scene, appears to capture roughly 10 gunshots.

Authorities have urged residents to steer clear of the affected area while the search continues. A Swiss military Super Puma helicopter was also deployed over the broader Aarau region, according to a Swiss emergency news outlet.

Aarau sits about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Zurich.
