Venezuela’s Ruling Party Supports Oil Agreement with Washington
(MENAFN) Venezuela’s ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) expresses strong support for a broad energy agreement reached with Washington, while Democratic lawmakers in the United States criticize President Donald Trump over the deal.
In a statement, the PSUV voices “full support” for acting President Delcy Rodriguez and the agreements reached with the United States in the energy sector.
The party says the arrangement could help Venezuela address the impact of more than a decade of US sanctions and economic restrictions, while contributing to economic recovery, strengthening public services and protecting jobs and workers’ incomes.
The PSUV also emphasizes that Venezuela’s “immense hydrocarbon reserves” should be used to advance national development. It adds that any energy-related arrangements must remain consistent with the country’s constitutional framework.
The party’s endorsement comes after Trump announces that Washington has obtained majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves, prompting strong criticism from US Democrats.
“Let’s be clear: this isn’t a win,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen from Maryland said, accusing Trump of putting American service members at risk “to get Venezuelan oil for his billionaire buddies.”
Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine also criticizes the administration, alleging that Trump is using the removal of President Nicolas Maduro as a means to “control Venezuelan oil.”
