Iran Conditions Hormuz Transit Understanding on US Commitments
(MENAFN) Iran says it has reached an understanding with Oman concerning transit through the Strait of Hormuz, but Tehran will not put the arrangement into effect until the United States meets its obligations, according to a senior Iranian diplomat.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi says the agreement does not immediately lead to changes in the status of the strategic waterway.
"This understanding will not automatically enter the implementation stage,” he said.
He explains that putting the arrangement into practice depends on the US fulfilling its commitments.
“Implementing this understanding requires the other side, particularly the US, to fulfill its commitments. Whenever these commitments are implemented, Iran will also take its measures,” he said.
Gharibabadi says Tehran is not rushing to reopen the strait and intends to maintain what he describes as “defensive measures” while continuing efforts to “counter threats.”
“These measures are not new, and if Washington is interested in returning to the path of diplomacy, it must accept responsibility for its past actions,” he added.
The Iranian official says the necessary coordination concerning transit arrangements has already been completed with Oman, but stresses that the next steps depend on the other side meeting the required conditions.
“Whenever these commitments are fulfilled, Iran will take the necessary action. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and if any vessel passes through this route, it will be with the coordination and authorization of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.
