Putin says Russia-Belarus trade, economic relations continue despite outside pressure
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that economic and trade relations between Russia and Belarus continue to expand despite what he described as efforts from outside parties to interfere with bilateral ties.
“Overall, I want to note that … our main area of interaction, trade and economics, is developing successfully, despite all external attempts to somehow influence it,” Putin said during opening remarks as he welcomed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo, west of Moscow.
Putin pointed to the two countries’ trade turnover as evidence of continued economic cooperation. Russian figures showed that bilateral trade reached nearly $52 billion last year, which he described as a positive result. He added that trade had grown by another 12.5% during the first half of this year, while Russian direct investment in Belarus stood at $4.5 billion.
The Russian leader also emphasized the importance of technological collaboration between the two countries. He noted that Belarus has “preserved and expanded much of what was created during the Soviet era,” saying this foundation could allow Moscow and Minsk to further develop joint work in areas such as microelectronics.
Putin said the two presidents would review the outcome of discussions held by Lukashenko in Moscow the previous day. He also stressed that Russia and Belarus remain actively engaged on international issues while continuing efforts to deepen cooperation through the Union State.
Lukashenko, meanwhile, said technological cooperation had been among the subjects discussed during his Friday meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. He indicated that the two sides would seek practical solutions on these matters as well as on other areas of bilateral cooperation.
“The fact that we are meeting with you is not solely our fault. The dynamics of international relations are such that they, among other things, push us to discuss the problems we face. You can be sure that we will overcome all difficulties together, working together,” he added.
Russia and Belarus have formally operated within the framework of a Union State for years, with both governments pursuing deeper political, economic and institutional integration.
