Israel Shells Southern Syria Despite Efforts to Ease Tensions
(MENAFN) The Israeli army carries out artillery fire against an area in southern Syria on Saturday, despite recent diplomatic efforts involving Syrian and Israeli officials aimed at reducing tensions between the two sides.
Four artillery shells hit Bat al-Warda Hill near Beit Jinn, according to reports, although no immediate information is available regarding casualties or material damage.
The incident occurs roughly a week after a Syrian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani meets with Israeli representatives in Jordan under US mediation. The discussions are reportedly part of efforts to prevent further escalation following an earlier Israeli strike on a Syrian military airbase.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa says Damascus is seeking a security arrangement with Israel that could eventually lead to a broader peace agreement, while maintaining Syria’s claim to the occupied Golan Heights.
Israel has controlled most of the Golan Heights since 1967.
Prior to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in late 2024, Israel regularly carried out attacks against targets in Syria that it said were associated with Iranian-backed groups. Since Assad’s departure, however, Israeli military operations have expanded to cover weapons storage facilities and strategic military sites in various parts of Syria.
Among the more recent targets is the Abu Duhur airbase in northwestern Idlib, which is struck by Israeli forces.
