South Korea Deploys Rescue Team as 9 Nationals Vanish in Nepal Floods
(MENAFN) South Korea dispatched a rescue team to Nepal on Saturday in a bid to locate nine of its citizens unaccounted for after devastating flash floods tore through the Himalayan country, Seoul's Foreign Ministry said.
The missing individuals are employees of energy firms Korea South-East Power and Doosan Enerbility, who lost communication when flooding struck Nepal's Rasuwa region without warning on Wednesday morning.
According to the ministry, the workers had been engaged in building a hydropower plant in the area at the time contact was lost.
Two chartered helicopters carried the rescue team into the search zone, targeting locations where the missing workers are believed to be, according to a local outlet.
Separately, ten other Doosan employees who had been stranded at a different site were rescued earlier.
The disappearances prompted South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to convene an emergency meeting. Cho further directed the South Korean Embassy in Kathmandu to stay in close contact with Nepali authorities and safeguard other South Korean nationals still awaiting evacuation.
The floods form part of a far larger catastrophe: more than 600 people have died in flash floods and landslides across Nepal and China, with roughly 3,000 still missing, according to media reports and local officials.
