Sudan Army Sends Elite Brigade to Blue Nile Front Amid RSF Clashes
(MENAFN) Sudan's army rushed reinforcements to a contested front line in southeastern Blue Nile state on Saturday, deploying an elite brigade as clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensified.
According to a statement from the army's 4th Infantry Division, based in Damazin, the security and intelligence service's "Elite Brigade" set out Saturday morning toward the Bakori axis to carry out a combat mission.
The division said the move was intended to strengthen troops already positioned in the region. "The deployment aims to reinforce forces stationed in the area, boost their operational capabilities and support ongoing military operations," the statement said.
As soldiers departed for the front, Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Tayeb Hussein, who heads the 4th Infantry Division, urged them to maintain vigilance, discipline and combat readiness.
The troop movement follows Hussein's visit a day earlier to the Fazogli area of Blue Nile state, where the army says it came under attack from both the RSF and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).
Complicating the picture, the RSF asserted Friday that its fighters had captured the Bakori and Sarkam military bases southeast of Damazin, the state capital. By Saturday morning, the army had issued no response to that claim.
The clashes come just days after the army reported downing a hostile strategic drone that entered Blue Nile state from Ethiopian airspace on Thursday — the third such interception the military says it has carried out in a single week.
Blue Nile is now one of several active front lines in Sudan's civil war. Fighting has also raged since Oct. 25, 2025, across North, West and South Kordofan, as well as in Darfur, pitting the army against the RSF.
The broader conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and forced roughly 13 million from their homes, according to United Nations and other international estimates.
