Music Publishers Sue Anthropic Over Alleged Copyright Theft
(MENAFN) Major music publishers associated with Sony Music and Warner Music file a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic, accusing it of using copyrighted works on a massive scale without authorization.
The legal action, filed late Friday in a federal court in Northern California, names Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann as defendants alongside the company.
The plaintiffs describe the alleged conduct as "one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history," setting the stage for a potentially lengthy legal dispute over how copyrighted music is used to develop artificial intelligence systems.
In their 48-page complaint, the music companies accuse Anthropic and its founders of systematically acquiring copyrighted material without permission and using it in connection with the development and operation of the company’s AI models.
"Defendants Anthropic and its founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann have conducted a brazen campaign of illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works on a massive scale in order to develop, operate, and reap enormous profits from Anthropic's 'Claude' series of artificial intelligence ('AI') models," the plaintiffs said in the complaint.
The case could become part of a broader legal battle over intellectual property rights as AI companies increasingly rely on large amounts of existing creative content to train and operate their systems.
