CIA chief suggests Trump, Zelensky, Putin meeting
(MENAFN) CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly put forward the idea of a three-way meeting involving US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a secret trip to Moscow earlier this week.
The visit was also intended to determine whether senior Russian intelligence officials could play a role in convincing Putin to consider restarting US-brokered negotiations with Ukraine, according to reports citing people familiar with the discussions.
US officials briefed Zelenskyy on Friday about Ratcliffe’s meetings in Moscow, including the proposal for a potential summit between the three leaders.
The Trump administration has previously discussed the possibility of such a meeting. Zelenskyy has indicated that he supports the idea, while Putin has so far opposed holding the summit.
Trump described Ratcliffe’s trip as "standard business", saying it was not aimed at warning Moscow over the possibility of a Russian attack against NATO territory.
During the visit, Ratcliffe reportedly delivered a pessimistic assessment of the war to Alexander Bortnikov, director of Russia’s Federal Security Service, and encouraged Moscow to reach an agreement before its strategic position deteriorates further.
According to reports, Ratcliffe considers Bortnikov a potentially constructive figure who could contribute to efforts to revive diplomatic engagement between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, said Thursday that US-facilitated negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv could potentially restart in September, according to media reports.
