Qalibaf Rejects US Claims That Economic Pressure Will Crush Iran

(MENAFN) Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf dismisses claims by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Washington’s blockade and economic measures are putting the Iranian economy on the verge of collapse.

“Liar, liar, pants on fire,” Qalibaf said in a post on US social media company X, responding to Bessent’s statement that the US had brought 130 million barrels of oil onto global markets over the previous 14 days.

Qalibaf refers to what he calls the “real 130s,” challenging Bessent to ask his advisers to examine figures from Moody’s that he says indicate more than $130 billion in costs resulting from the war.

He also alleges that US trading firm Jane Street loses more than $130 million after taking a position that oil prices would decline during a single futures-contract rollover.

“Liar, liar, yields on fire,” Qalibaf added, while sharing an article by economist Paul Krugman titled “Scott Bessent Fails to Gaslight the Market.”

Bessent had previously argued that “the blockade and Operation Economic Outcast will crush the failing Iranian economy,” while claiming that Washington had helped bring 130 million barrels of oil to the market over a two-week period.

Relations between Tehran and Washington remain highly strained following the outbreak of war in late February, when strikes target Iran. Tehran responds by attacking US military positions and assets located in Arab countries that maintain close ties with Washington.
