Cinema Figures Call on Venice Festival to Display Palestinian Flag
(MENAFN) More than 200 figures from the film and cultural sectors call on the Venice Film Festival to display the Palestinian flag throughout this year’s event, pointing to the participation of two Palestinian productions in the official selection.
In an open letter issued ahead of the festival’s opening next week, the Venice4Palestine initiative says the selection of Ahmed Hassouna’s Al Mowaten Osama (Citizen Osama) and Muayad Alayan’s Hiwar ma’ albahr (Conversation with the Sea) should be recognized in the same manner as films representing other countries.
The initiative asks festival organizers to fly the Palestinian flag “alongside those representing all the other films in the official selection for the duration of the event.”
The appeal also encourages filmmakers, journalists, media professionals and cultural figures to show solidarity with Palestinians and support a boycott of organizations and institutions associated with the Israeli government over the war in Gaza and Israel’s wider military actions in the region.
“The exceptional nature of the historical moment we are living through compels us to isolate Israel diplomatically, culturally, and economically,” it stated, adding that such measures should continue until the Israeli government complies with international law and ends the occupation and colonization of Palestine.
Among those signing the letter are Italian filmmakers Matteo Garrone and Marco Simon Puccioni, actors Guy Pearce, Indya Moore and Adele Haenel, musician Roger Waters and Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux, along with more than 200 other prominent figures from the international film and cultural community.
